Here's a political shocker.

State Rep. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, wants so badly to legalize Tasers for ordinary citizens in Michigan, he's willing to be shot by one in front of fellow House members.

Jones arranged to be zapped last week at a committee meeting to prove the electric stun guns are safe. The legislation in the House Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources Committee would allow those with concealed weapons permits to carry a Taser gun, which temporarily disables an attacker with a high-volt electric shock. Only law enforcement officers can use Tasers in Michigan.

Alas, the meeting was canceled. But Jones, a cosponsor of the legislation, pledged to be hit with a Taser when the committee takes up the bills in lame duck session.

Jones said he's never been Tasered before and doesn't fear the shock.

"It's a good cause and worth a little pain or sting," said Jones, a former Eaton County sheriff. "I feel very, very strongly that the citizens of Michigan should have a less than lethal option to defend themselves if they're being attacked."
